Department of Social Work

Social work is a helping and an enabling profession. The main purpose of social work is to improve a society’s overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Social workers do not limit their work to individuals only; but they also work with families, groups, neighborhoods, communities, and organizations. Social work practice is strengths-based. Social workers assist people or groups identify their problems, determine their skills and capacities, what they are doing well, and how that was accomplished, and then analyze ways that those strengths might be applied to the identified problems.

Although social work is yet to get its professional recognition in Bangladesh, the practice of social work is noticeable in both government and non-government agencies. There are some important areas in Bangladesh where practices social work including medical health setting, psychiatric setting, correctional setting, developmental setting, women and child welfare setting, counseling setting, youth welfare setting, etc. In this connection the Department of Social Work was establised at UITS in 2013 under the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to make social engineers who will enhance human well-being and meet the basic human needs of the people with particular attention to the people who are physically and mentally vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.

It is essential to construct the moral foundation among the students so that they can make a meaningful contribution to the betterment of society and improving the lives of individuals. Therefore, the Department of social work supports the core values of the social work profession. These are;

Vision

The Department envisions becoming a leading department of choice and preparing students for a wide range of social work roles from therapist and case manager to community organizer and administrator.

 

Goals & Objectives

  1. The social work program will prepare students to be able to work as entry-level generalist practitioners with individuals, families, groups, and communities.
  2. The social work program will prepare students to be able to practice in a culturally competent and sensitive manner.
  3. The social work program will prepare students to advocate for the disenfranchised, oppressed, underrepresented and non-dominant groups through practice and policy.
  4. The social work program will prepare students to explore the interrelationships among people and systems, as related to generalist social work practice.

 

 

 

Scope of the Graduates

  1. Social work graduates can apply for administrative and supervisory positions in government organizations.
  2. Fresh graduates can apply for jobs in non-government organizations those are working for youth welfare, women empowerment, aged care, disable and minor communities.
  3. They can also have the privilege to work in the international NGOs and organizations like UNESCO, UNICEF, UNDP, WHO, Save the Children, UCEP, etc.
  4. Social work graduates can work as counselors in substance abuse areas like rehabilitation centres in order to help in the treatment and rehabilitation of people addicted to drugs and suffering from problems related to other negative emotions.
  5. Graduates with outstanding academic results can apply for teaching jobs in colleges and universities.
